The Presidium
of the Association of Towns Awarded the Europe Prize
Nancy, 4th October 2003
On October 4th, the Chairman – Tadeusz Wrona – presided over the Meeting of the
Presidium of the Prize of Europe Winning Towns Association, which took place in
Nancy, France. Besides the representatives of the city of Częstochowa, mayors
and representatives of 11 European towns (Berlin, Braunfels, Darmstadt,
Karlsruhe, Klagenfurt, Macon, Nancy, Regensburg, St. Pölten, Strasbourg, and
Tübingen) participated in the meeting.
The Council of Europe was represented by Johanna Schicker – the Chairperson of
the Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize of the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Council of Europe; Ms Marie-Anne Menger – Head of the Europe Prize Section in
the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and Ms Antonella Cagnolati – Secretary of
the Committee on the Environment Protection, Agriculture and Local and Regional
Affairs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Chairperson of the Association, Mr Tadeusz Wrona, warmly thanked the authorities
of Nancy for organising the meeting and all the participants for their presence
at the meeting.
On behalf of the hosts, Ms Lilli-Anne Schaeffer – Deputy Mayor of Nancy took the
floor. The following speaker who delivered a speech was Ms Johanna Schicker.
During the business part of the Meeting the following matters were agreed upon:
a). place and date of General Assembly in Aarhus (Denmark) in May, 2004;
b). an appointment of working group set up under the leadership of Ms
Russ-Scherer, Mayor of Tübingen, intending to draw up:
- topic of the conference, accompanying the General Meeting
- topic for the Youth Forum.
- the decision not to mint a medal commemorating the Association's 20th
anniversary, in view of the financial problems mentioned;
- the decision concerning the logo was postponed to the next meeting of the
Prize of Europe Winning Towns Association;
- analysing the legal consequences of obtaining a legal status for the
Association and discussing the following issue during the meeting in Aarhus;
- acceptance of the Petition to the European Union prepared by the city of
Częstochowa regarding the investigation priority of proposals, submitted by
Europe Wining Towns Prize winners;
- sending to the secretariat of Association the proposals, intending to
stimulate activity of the non-active towns.
Closing the Meeting, Chairman Mr Tadeusz Wrona, thanked the delegates for
attending the meeting and for their co-operation so far.
